Earlier this week, some residents on Happey Valley Rd. spotted what appeared to be an adult bear walking through their yards, visiting bird feeders and garbage cans.
For one resident, a Tuesday night encounter was a bit too close for comfort.
Martha Hammer said she was walking through her home around 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, when motion illuminated by the spotlight in her back yard caught her eye.
“I thought, ‘Oh gosh, it’s a raccoon,’” Hammer said.
But as she approached the windows of her sunroom, she had a startling realization: “That was no raccoon.”
A large bear, believed to be an adult, had approached her house, most likely to inspect some bird feeders.
“He was walking behind the house, against the windows — between the shrubbery and the window of the living room,” Hammer said. “He was pressed against the glass, because I could see the fur and his pink skin. I just panicked and started backing away from the window.”
With a wooded area nearby, Hammer and other residents of the neighborhood are not far from a walking trail are accustomed to seeing wildlife, even though their properties lie within city limits.
Deer are sometimes spotted in groups of a dozen or more, while wild turkeys are also known to scratch around in the same area.
But, a trend of missing and destroyed bird feeders indicates at least one larger animal has also been foraging nearby.
“I’ve had three bird feeders that were gone,” Hammer said. “The last one, I found it up the fence row and it was chewed. We knew it was a large animal, because when it took the bird feeder the shepherd’s hook was bent. We knew we had an animal of some sort, but we didn’t know what it was.”
IT HAPPENS
As startling as it may be to spot a bear inside town limits, past history suggests it’s not uncommon for the animals to wander into areas dominated by humans in the spring and summer months.
In 2014, a small black bear was first reported in town, crossing Burkesville Rd by the Cumberland Parkway access near Mikes Cycle World before moving on to Marrowbone and area streets and making its way down the highway causing major havoc for drivers.
That animal was spotted at various restaurants and businesses along Happy Valkey Rd, before disappearing into a wooded area behind Zack's Minute Mart on Lexington Dr.
In the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, rangers estimate a bear population of 1,500.
The state agency does have some tips for areas with a high bear population, like East Tennessee.
•Never feed wild animals
-Never leave food on Grills after a cookout
-Always report sitings as soon as seen
-Never walk alone at night in wooded areas
-If in presence of a bear, don't act scared. It frightens the animal and it becomes defensive.

new york city woman loses her temper, causes black hole to swallow her entire town
Anna, 26, of New York City, DC was in the middle of an argument with a colleague when her temper got so out of control, it formed a small black hole, which demolished the vast majority of her neighborhood. "I just couldn't take it anymore, and unleashed my forces at the person who was irritating me. I had no idea the energy of my rage could cause such destruction," says Anna. Despite the ruination her anger has caused, Anna says she has no regrets. "I actually wish I knew I had this ability sooner!" Anna laughs. "There are a lot of people and things I could have eradicated from my life in this way."

whale spotted in illinois river
A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri.
While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
