A lazy employee can be a problem for a manager in many ways. A talented employee who is lazy is robbing the company of much needed productivity and can anger co-workers who must pick up the slack. A good manager knows how to handle an employee who isn't doing his job, by taking immediate action to resolve the situation.

Options
A good manager knows her options when it comes to a lazy employee and is prepared to exercise the option that is in the best interest of the company. Get together with the human resources department and discuss your lazy employee to find out what company policies would apply. Document the employee's acts of insubordination in accordance with company guidelines to be used if termination is necessary. Managers need to keep the best interests of her employees and the company in mind, but if an employee refuses to cooperate, then that limits her options. Monitor the progress of the employee to ensure that all company productivity goals are being achieved.
Discussion
Prior to sitting down with a lazy employee, have documented proof of his indiscretions. If your company has a way for employees to log in and log out to monitor hours worked, then use that to show how the employee is persistently late and leaves early. Complaints from co-workers should be kept anonymous, but can be used to back up your assertion that the employee is lazy. When you have your face to face discussion with this employee, avoid confrontation if possible. Do not bring out any evidence of the employee's behavior unless it is necessary because that will put the employee on the defensive. Try to discuss the execution of job duties and what you and the employee can do to improve productivity.
Be More Visible
Some employees require a higher level of supervision than others. If you have a lazy employee, then it could be the result of you not spending enough time with the staff. Get out and interact with your employees more often. Discuss the projects they are working on and the deadlines they are trying to reach. Avoid singling out the offending employee as that may make her feel alienated. By keeping a closer watch on the entire team, you can help the under performing employee to be more productive while making him feel like he is getting the same attention as the rest of the staff.
New Challenges
A lazy employee could also be a bored employee. When you ask staff members to perform the same tasks every day, some team members may start to resent the repetition and begin to lose interest. If you know that an under performing employee has the ability to become productive, then give her new projects to spur her interest.

whale spotted in illinois river
A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri.
While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
